Conceived by the IAF and architect Valerie Mulvin and filmed by director Martin Danneels, The Space Is The Thing (2024) is a filmic portrait of four Irish towns: Youghal, Dungarvan, Clones and Templemore. These four towns represent four common morphologies of the Irish town. Captured here in immersive film format, the film offers an elaboration on the historical analysis of Irish towns from Mulvin’s acclaimed book Approximate Formality (2021). It features archival imagery, drone footage and street-level filmmaking to tell a vivid story that links geometry, architecture and complex urban histories. More than this, the film is a time capsule, crystallising the diverse states of these towns in 2024 and capturing intimate moments from the lives of their inhabitants long after their streets and squares first found form.
